(12.05.09) At a recent workshop on innovative aquaculture research, APC Senior Scientist Ståle Helland presented an example of interval training of salmon. This was done by a multi institutional research group working at the Nofima  APC respiration laboratory at Sunndalsøra. This project involved NOFIMA researchers Barbara Grisdale-Helland and Ståle Helland.

Brewing new feeds with beer waste

(04.05.09) Beer production annually produces 30 million tonnes of brewer's spent grain (BSG) worldwide, which constitutes approximately 25% crude protein, 10% lipids, 50% crude fibre, and some ash. In the best case, BSG is sold in fresh form (75% water) as feed for cattle; in the worst case, its valuable nutrients are wasted as landfill. Given the constant search for alternative feeds and the new trends in poultry nutrition, what is the potential of dry BSG in monogastric diets?

Fermenting an ancient technology for the future

(22.04.09) High-quality tilapia needs high-quality feed. Rapeseed meal and cottonseed meal are potential ingredients because of their availability in the tropics and subtropics. Moreover, both are more affordable than the main protein sources in aquaculture: fishmeal and soybean meal.
